What’s happening with bargaining between CUPE 118 and the District of Ucluelet
Bargaining started in February 2024 and we’ve been meeting with District to work towards negotiating a new collective agreement. This spring we reached impasse with the District, meaning we felt there we’re issues we could not agree to and that more direct bargaining wouldn’t be productive and get us closer to a tentative agreement.
On May 16, 2024 CUPE 118 members voted 100 percent in favour of strike action.
What do CUPE 118 members do in Ucluelet?
There’s a whole team of CUPE 118 members who provide the public services Ucluelet residents, businesses and visitors rely on every day. Workers are proud to provide vital services that help keep the community and local economy running.
Parks, recreation, trail maintenance, water and utilities, sanitation, bylaw enforcement, and planning are key public services that are provided by the District and staffed by CUPE 118
members.
What are the main issues left to resolve?
Workers are seeking a fair wage increase in line with what other workers in our region have already received. Many District workers are paid less than workers performing the same duties as other workers in comparable cities in the region, and we don’t want to fall further behind.
What happens next?
We’ve applied for mediation and we are scheduled to meet with a mediator from the BC Labour Relations Board on August 27 and 28. A mediator is a neutral third-party negotiator who will the help the parties to try and find common ground and successfully negotiate a tentative agreement.
We’re working hard to secure a contract that will continue to support the families, businesses and community of Ucluelet, as well as provide fair wage increases, while aiming to avoid job action at the height of our most important time of year.
Is there any strike action planned?
Before taking any strike action we are legally required to serve 72-hour strike notice. As bargaining evolves, we will continue to keep this page updated with new information including the announcement of any strike action.
